I myself am Việt Kiều. Up until about a year (or two) ago I was not interested in my heritage. But after a while I decided to look upon my own culture, from its history from the Lý to Nguyễn dynasties, to the Viêt nam war. I decided to learn my own language at my late-teen age (too late to take Vietnamese school let’s be real).
I have previously listened to Japanese music from animes, and Korean music from the start of the Hallyu wave (about the era of Haru Haru). I was introduced to Haru Haru when it first came out, but frankly never caught up in the wave (I’m a dude). My music choices up to about 2 years ago were symphonic pieces by the likes of Tchaikovsky or Hans Zimmer.
I decided, “Hey, I want to learn about my own culture as well as modern music, why not introduce myself into pop from the Vietnamese perspective?”
In the last two years I have managed to gather a compilation of 54 Vpop pieces, with this blog helping me along the way (I discovered this blog about 1.5 years ago).
